Jan Josephszoon van Goyen fue un pintor paisajista neerlandés del Barroco. Pintó muchos de los canales en La Haya y sus alrededores, así como los pueblos que rodean los campos de Delft, Róterdam, Leiden y Gouda. Otros pintores de paisaje neerlandeses populares de los siglos XVI y XVII fueron Jacob van Ruisdael, Aelbert Cuyp, Hendrick Avercamp, Ludolf Backhuysen, Meindert Hobbema y Aert van der Neer.

La pintura del Siglo de Oro neerlandés o pintura barroca holandesa se desarrolló durante un período de la historia neerlandesa que abarca el siglo XVII, durante y después de la guerra de los Ochenta Años (1568-1648) por la independencia holandesa. Las Provincias Unidas eran la nación más próspera de Europa, liderando el comercio, la ciencia y el arte. El arte holandés tuvo que reinventarse por completo después del brusco corte con las tradiciones culturales católicas y de la antigua monarquía.
