El término Neoclasicismo surgió en el siglo XVIII para denominar al movimiento estético que venía a reflejar en las artes los principios intelectuales de la Ilustración, que desde mediados del siglo XVIII se venían produciendo en la filosofía y que consecuentemente se habían transmitido a todos los ámbitos de la cultura. Aunque, coincidiendo con la decadencia de Napoleón Bonaparte, el Neoclasicismo fue perdiendo adeptos en favor del Romanticismo.
1800–1900
El Romanticismo es un movimiento cultural que apareció en Alemania y en Reino Unido a finales del siglo XVIII como una reacción contra la Ilustración y el Neoclasicismo, confiriendo prioridad a los sentimientos frente la razón. Es considerado como el primer movimiento de cultura que cubrió el mapa completo de Europa. En la mayoría de las áreas estuvo en su apogeo en el período aproximado de 1800 a 1850. Paradójicamente fue un movimiento que tuvo su origen en el seno de la Ilustración, influenciado por el Prerromanticismo, para posteriormente ceder su lugar al Positivismo, que fomenta el pensamiento crítico y el empirismo como bases del conocimiento y la sociedad.
